Peoples Announces Bank Account Assistance Program for Afghan Refugees

Wausau, Wis. (January 31, 2022) Peoples State Bank and the Ethiopian Community Development Council’s (ECDC) Multicultural Community Center in Wausau announced a coordinated plan to assist Afghan refugees by opening bank accounts for those settling in the Wausau area. ECDC has chosen Peoples as one of a select group of financial institutions to offer accounts to the refugees.

“Once we were in contact with the ECDC, we quickly put into place a procedure for working with the refugees and the ECDC representative to open a Peoples Edge Checking account for them,” said Robert McPherson, Peoples vice president – Risk Management. “Peoples identified senior employees at our Wausau - Stewart Avenue and Eastside locations and have equipped them to assist these customers in opening their first checking account and welcome them to the area.”

“We appreciate Peoples State Bank’s interest in helping the Afghan refugees as they begin their new lives in the Wausau area,” said Adam VanNoord, executive director of the ECDC Multicultural Center in Wausau. “This is just one more step for them to become acclimated to the community and become productive residents.”

“As these families become settled in the Wausau area, we know how important it is for them to have a trusted relationship with a bank,” said Scott Cattanach, Peoples president and CEO. “If it were my family, moving to a new part of the world would be immensely challenging. We desire to work with compassion to help these newest members of our community in their adjustment.”
